Slender wheatgrass is found across North America in sunny dryish habitats, particularly on dry prairies, dunes, lakeshores, and woodland margins. It prefers sandy or sandy loam soil. It sends up erect waist-high stems, with the flowers lying flat against the stem. Each cluster produces several stems.
